Project XJ – Jeep Cherokee XJ 1995 Under 80 Dollar Upgrades #2

0

What have we been up to on our Cherokee Project? We’ve made a couple of different videos however we haven’t given any breakdown of what specifically we’ve done. Most of the product/mods we did on our Jeep have been relatively cheap and easy to install. Let’s get started!

  1. Our first install we decided to bring in a 2-inch lift kit from RTOffroad by Crown Automotive. It was a rather easy install only taking a couple of hours with the help of coil spring compressors and penetrating spray the day before.
  2. The second was a basic tune-up changing out various engine components such as the map sensor, fuel filter, throttle body spacer, spark plugs and cords, and various caps that no longer were usable.
  3. The third thing was we started making some cosmetic changes such as decals, plastic dipping the front grille, switching out the original headlights, taillights, side marker lamps, and license plate bulb with LEDs.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to make the big changes we wanted to such as new tires, rims, upgraded steering. Building a Jeep should always be a long process because it’s your Jeep and it needs to be filled with parts that match your style. If you are interested in buying any of these parts there will be links for them below

Stainless Steel Antennas for the Jeep Cherokee XJ in 6 Sizes

0

• IN DEPTH REVIEW: The antennas are offered in several different colors as you saw in the video like black, red, blue, matte and much more. Be aware however since these antennas are smaller compared to stock you will lose reception depending on what size you order. The only ones we’ve ever had trouble with are the 3″ and 6″.

They come in 6 sizes from 3,6,9,12,15 and 21 inches.

We have a 3″ on our JK and it works just fine in the city but as soon as you leave it definitely will lose reception faster than the bigger size models. The 9″ is my favorite because it offers a sleek look as well as very little to no reception loss. It all just depends on you. Thanks for watching Cherokee Top 100 products with us at askajeeper. com.

How To Replace the Map Position Sensor on a Jeep Cherokee XJ

0

The Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor is there to determine how much fuel the engine needs to run properly. You may need to replace it for many reasons here are a few.

Poor drive-ability, rough idle, surging, very rich exhaust, pinging with mid-grade fuel. Ours was experiencing rough idle and replacing the MAP sensor took care of it right away.

How to Replace a Fuel Filter on a 1984-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ

0

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to take the gas cap off and make sure along the fuel rail you find the release cap. Remove it and release the pressure. (Like deflating a tire). Fuel may leak out so put a paper tower or cloth under it.

• IN DEPTH REVIEW:
The fuel filter is a very easy install. One of the biggest hang ups I had was the placing of the screws when went to remove the filter itself. I would recommend a smaller/flexible screw driver. Its a good idea to replace because it keeps the fuel pump and engine running smoothly.
We bought these parts from Crown Automotive. They are one of the biggest sellers of aftermarket and OE replacement parts for Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge. The fuel filter is a very easy install.

Ask A Jeeper a Question about the Jeep Cherokee XJ

0

We know you have lots of questions about your Jeep. With all the models of the Jeep Cherokee XJ out there there are bound to be a lot of questions that you want to ask.

We do our best to answer whatever question you might have for the Jeep Cherokee XJ.

So ask us a question about your Jeep Cherokee XJ and we will do our best to find you the perfect answer.

What Year Cherokee XJ Should I Buy?

IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO BUY A CHEROKEE WHAT YEARS SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR?
From all my experience in working with jeeps. My favorite so far has been the Cherokee XJ. It’s reliable, has awesome resale value and quite frankly is the best looking in my opinion. But what years should you buy is a common question. The years range from 1984 to 2001 which makes it difficult to understand which years you should choose. But what years make the best Cherokee? For us it has always been the 1991-01. And it is for these various reasons.

TRANSFER CASE:
Depending on what kind of terrain you live in or are planning on going through. Deciding between these two T-Cases has been a huge discussion in the Jeep aftermarket world. The NP231 or the NP242? My choice is the NP231. Not only is it a reliable case but it has more perks than the NP242. With more aftermarket support than the NP242. It’s the obvious choice for those wanting to lift their jeep like most do. The NP242 transfer case in my opinion has been for people who don’t want to lift their jeep but need a full-time on the road 4wd mode. Good for all around trail-riding. But not necessarily for your “hardcore” Jeep guy.

4.0 LITER MOTOR  (High-Output Engine)
The 4.0L engine, with all the Jeeps I’ve worked on is by far the easiest to work with. This motor has the biggest aftermarket replacement parts out of any of the Jeep engines. We recommend the 4.0 inline 6 High Output motor which was used in the years following 1991. Ask any Jeep guy and he’ll say hands down the 4.0 is the most reliable engine ever put into these jeeps. Bulletproof almost. We recommend it highly.

TRANSMISSION:
What should you be looking for in a transmission? Reliability? Long lasting performance? The transmissions vary on these models. Both have either the AX-15 or the AW4. Both with the 23 spline outputs. However when it boils down to it. The AX-15 and the AW4 are basically the same transmission for reliability except for one is manual (AX-15) and the other automatic (AW4). The AW4 however is the more popular transmission with the Cherokee XJ and has the best reviews among Cherokee XJ owners.

ARE YOU SOLD YET?
Just a recap, get a 1991-2001 Cherokee with a NP231 transfer case kit, and a 4.0L High Output Motor and AW4 transmission. I have a lot of Jeeps that I like. And besides the facts I base my thoughts off my own opinions. I have worked on all types of Jeeps and the Cherokee has never forsaken me. It’s my favorite jeep by far and I wanted to share why. Thanks for reading! Now go out and buy your Cherokee!
