Black Out Your Grille for an Extreme Look
There comes a time when the grille on your Jeep Wrangler JK will start to look a little haggard. Rocks will chip the paint, scrapes and dings will start to show, and black specs will pepper the grille like spices in clam chowder. In short the grill starts to look bad.
Then you have some options, the more expensive being to change the grille out to a new one, or one that replaces the signature Jeep slats, or grille inserts. Or you can paint the grille but that is not as easy as it sounds, especially if you are not a good painter.
But, if you are still looking for a great option to black out your grille, then may we recommend a product called Plasti-Dip which is a plastic based spray coating that provides a paint like barrier over the surface of the grille, that protects the paint, and looks good.
The texture finish can be done in quite a few different colors like black, pink, gray, and more. There are a few different finishes like gloss, matte, and standard texture looks. And best of all you can probably black out your grille in its entirety for under $15.00.
The really cool thing about this product is that it is not permanent. It will last about a year or two if you take care of it. But when you are done you can add more to the bad spots, or simply peel it off and start again. It goes over the paint on the grille and does not harm it.
INSTALLER TIPS AND TRICKS
There are a few things you should understand before you use this product. One is that you should prep the surface before you coat it. A good cleaning with mild soap and water will suffice and then make sure it is dry.
While you do not need to mask, you can if you need to, but when removing tape it may lift the coating so be prepared with a razor or toothpick to cut the coating. The application is the key. Don’t over spray the first coat, build each coat evenly and take your time.
Make sure you coat from all angles, under good lighting.
See a video of how we did it. Black out your grille on your Jeep Wrangler JK just like we did and get a cool new look that wont cost much. I believe this took us about two cans to do the whole grille.
