The Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor is there to determine how much fuel the engine needs to run properly. You may need to replace it for many reasons here are a few.

Poor drive-ability, rough idle, surging, very rich exhaust, pinging with mid-grade fuel. Ours was experiencing rough idle and replacing the MAP sensor took care of it right away.
